Today in 1862, Congress enacted legislation that established the National Cemetery at Fort Leavenworth. Notable burials include Brigadier General Henry Leavenworth (who Fort Leavenworth is named in honor of) and Captain Thomas W. Custer, brother of General George Armstrong Custer.
