Scott County Library Children’s Department is excited to kick off the statewide early literacy initiative, 6 by 6!!

What is 6 by 6? This program emphasizes the six skills that parents and caregivers can help children develop before they learn to read, at about the age of 6.

The 6 by 6 program was created by the Johnson County Library and adopted by the State Library of Kansas to promote statewide.

The Six Skills:

Have Fun with Books

Notice Print All Around You

Talk, Talk, Talk

Look for Letters Everywhere

Tell Stories About Everything

Take Time to Rhyme

The Children’s Department with the help of a Grant from the Scott Community Foundation has put together 6 kits that will be shared for 6 weeks at a time.  Each child who attends programming will receive a set of the “6 by 6” cards detailing the 6 skills for parents and caregivers along with a paperback book that goes with each of our kits.  In addition, activities and “recipe” cards have been developed for these skills and each child will receive the card/activity that goes with that week’s skill area.
